Hello Digital Dating,
Question for you. I met this interesting guy online right before a month long vacation where I left the city. We stayed in touch via email and he told me he’d love to go out when I got back. When I arrived back I got in touch with him only for him to tell me that he found someone. I am grateful for the fact that he told me, rather than just ignore me… but this is where it got weird. He asked if I wanted to get together as friends for a coffee and to do something. Do you think he genuinely wanted to meet me as a friend… or see if we had chemistry, as a potential backup? Either way, I said no.

I agree with Joel’s insight about men vs. women breaking the ice and sending the first message. In my opinion, this is the most fundamentally broken thing about all dating websites.
I’ve heard women complain about getting an inbox full of message that say simply “hey baby” or something otherwise short and useless, but I would argue that it’s more frustrating to send off message after message, and get no reply. I’ve had a few of those “hey baby” message myself, and they’re really not that big a deal.
Maybe the solution is a website to force users to write messages of certain length, as Joel mentioned, but _also_ to prevent users from using the site until they answer a certain percentage of their inbox. I know some sites use a “Thanks, but no thanks” button, and I don’t know why they all don’t use this.
